46歲的狄波頓（Alain De Botton）在瑞士出生，但小時候就到了英國，曾經在劍橋與牛津大學受教育，在台灣出版了「新聞的騷動」、「哲學的慰藉」、「我談的那場戀愛」等書。
英國公投決定脫歐，狄波頓告訴義大利「共和報」，「我們犯了大錯，這是英格蘭令人悲傷的一面。」
對於支持脫歐的選民，狄波頓並不感到憤怒，令他生氣的是前倫敦市長強生（Boris Johnson）、英國獨立黨（UKIP）主席法拉吉（Nigel Farage）等鼓吹脫歐的政治人物。
他說，「他們是騙子，向公民展開謊言轟炸，用不可能持續的謊言欺騙人。他們是如此不誠實，以至於現在馬上食言了。」
但在民主國家必須尊重言論自由，狄波頓說，「即使是像法拉吉這樣的江湖術士，也不能剝奪他的權利。」
狄波頓說，「人民像是著了魔，被扭曲的烏托邦吸引。這在英國從未發生過，而現在美國的川普是一樣的現象。當代社會進入遺忘、退化的新形式。社會忘了實際上，財富、和平和智慧是多麼脆弱，對眼前的一切棄之如敝屣，但無法解決問題。」
要遏止民粹式的語言，狄波頓認為，「唯一的方法是公民和媒體必須有智慧，用事實和耐心一一檢視發言。」
民主進入「後事實」的時代，在網路上事實變得支離破碎。狄波頓指出，當前確實如此，但自古以來總是有人試圖用直覺和熱情來掩蓋理性。
狄波頓還認為，即使公投決定，但英國不會脫歐。他說，「強生會當上首相，因為覬覦歐盟市場，他始終不會根據里斯本條約第50條，向歐盟申請退出。」1050529
